The ancestors of the Yamashita family was a horse veterinarian.
In the Edo period, they worked as one of the three major post in the village along with the village headman and the blacksmith. They were considered as one of the wealthiest and one of the biggest horse owner in the Kiso area.
Uncommonly for mountain villages, the building features lavish decorative architecture. Preserved features such as the sunken hearth, and calligraphy in the tatami rooms, remind us of days gone by.
Archeological museum next to the Yamashita residence is a museum where you can see the historical heritage of Kaida from Paleolithic era to Jomon era.
