HOT SPRINGS - ONSEN

Japan is one of the most volcanically active countries in the world and as a result, contains an abundance of natural hot springs. Over the centuries, these have become a beloved staple of Japanese culture and make for an unforgettable visitor experience.

Hot springs (onsen) are widely sought out for their therapeutic benefits. Depending on the location, the waters vary in temperature and mineral composition to create unique bathing experiences. Onsen are also said to benefit the mind with their beautiful natural settings and social opportunities.

The Kiso region features the rare Hydrogen Carbonate hot springs, characterised by the fine bubbles which appear on the skin during bathing. This type of hot spring is said to dilate the capillaries and lower blood pressure.

It should be noted that all bathers are expected to follow the traditional onsen etiquette of showering before entering the hot water. The showering stations are typically a row of stools where bathers sit and wash themselves using the complimentary toiletries. Only once thoroughly clean and rinsed of soap may they enter the baths to begin their therapy.
